Wendy's endless energy and love for sport is infectious. Keen from the offset, her hard work has since been recognised by London Sport, naming Wendy on this year's shortlist for Volunteer of the Year Award.
Wendy first volunteered with us at our Summer Festival 2015, after Wendy’s college tutor recommended DSC as an organisation that could support her ambition of becoming a sports coach.
Shy Wendy was eager to get involved from the off and worked tireless throughout the event. One year on and Wendy was the Polybat Lead Coach at our 2016 Summer Festival. Wendy now volunteers weekly at 4 of our DSC Community Clubs and is an integral part of the running of these clubs.
Emma Cranston, Club Development Officer is pleased to have Wendy on board. “Wendy’s endless energy and love for sport is infectious. We are very lucky to have Wendy as a volunteer in the Community Club programme.”
From originally being more interested in participating in sport, Wendy now fulfils an abundance of roles within the clubs. Examples of this include, leading warm ups, greeting new club members at reception and being in charge of the registers.
However, there is one skill that Wendy has really taken too and is absolutely brilliant at working one-on-one with young people with autism. In particular, she has developed a strong rapport with a young girl at Club Tower Hamlets. The Father was happy to comment saying, “My daughter really looks up to Wendy. Wendy’s patience and enthusiasm with my daughter and all the other club members is absolutely brilliant week in, week out.”
Wendy attends Westminster Kingsway College, where she represents her college football and basketball teams. Wendy would like to turn her love for sport into a career and the Community Club programme has given her the platform to do so.
In Wendy’s words, “I want to be a sports coach. I love sport.” Wendy is clearly making headway on the coaching pathway having recently been shortlisted for the London Sport Volunteer of the Year Award.
From all at DSC, good luck Wendy!
