Our Community Club members enjoyed our very first Netball competition aimed at getting more women & girls active!

On the 30th May 2018, The Castle Centre played host to our first Netball competition for predominantly our female members with a learning disability. The event acted as the South East regional competition for England Netball's Marion Smith National Championships, with other regionals taking place this Spring.

4 teams were formed by members from Club Islington, Lambeth, Kensington & Chelsea, Wandsworth, Southwark, Brent and Hackney as well as guests, Share Community, with the incentive of winning the prized trophy, as well as the 1st and 2nd teams earning a spot at national competitions in July.

On a very warm day, the competition quickly heated up. Close matches between rival teams Southwark and Lambeth saw Lambeth take an early lead in the group stage. However it was Share Community that stormed to the top of the standings, winning 3 from 3 at the half way stage. In the reverse fixtures Southwark found their rhythm and inflicted Share's first defeat but it was clear these teams were the favourites.

The final standings after all group fixtures were completed, saw Share top the table with Southwark a very close second, setting up a much anticipated final (finalists pictured above).

Although Share were full of energy inspired by team captain Joyce, Southwark's class quickly shone. It was fitting that the competition's stand out performer, Aisla hit a hot streak netting 4 shots in a row! Share made a fight back late on but it was not enough to prevent Southwark winning with a result of 10-4 and taking home the first Community Club Netball trophy.

The event was a fantastic chance for our members to put their netball training into practice, in what would have been a first competition for most of the players. It was played in fantastic spirit and though there could only be one winner, all thorough enjoyed the day.

Business Development Manager, Louis Wickett-Padgham, commented: "It was fantastic to provide an event that was focused on getting our women and girls more active. We pride ourselves on creating new experiences for our members, so it was fitting that the majority of our members hadn't ever competed against players outside of their weekly Community Club."

Special thanks go to our Community Club volunteers, Graham, the day's timekeeper, Alex, Marie and Gracia who all helped ensure the event ran smoothly.
