We launched our first holiday programme for disabled children in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets

Our inaugural Tower Hamlets Summer holiday programme for primary school aged disabled children got off to a great start with lots of interest from local families. Those who attended enjoyed the opportunity to try out different sports and activities as well making new friends along the way. The two-week programme was held at Poplar Baths Leisure Centre which proved to be an excellent venue, offering plenty of space and variety for the enthusiastic participants.

Specialist programmes such as this are so important for disabled children who are often excluded from taking part in sport and physical activity. The health benefits of being active are well documented but physical activity within a group environment can also have a positive impact on mental health as well as helping developing social skills.

A mother of one of the young attendees commented that our new programme benefited her whole family and allowed her to leave her disabled child in a safe, enjoyable environment and provided her with respite during the Summer holidays, which can sometimes be a stressful time of the year.

We are grateful to St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation, Tower Hamlets Council Sports Development Team and Better for their invaluable support in helping us put together our holiday programme.
